What Size Chandelier? Sizing by Table, Room, and Ceiling
What size chandelier do you need? The table-width and room-size rules, hanging heights by ceiling, and how VidaLite's 10 chandeliers measure up.
The short answer: Chandelier size starts with width. Over a dining table, go about 12 inches narrower than the table. With no table, add the room's length and width in feet and read the sum as inches. Then check body height, the fixture's own height, against your ceiling: it caps how high the bottom can sit. All ten VidaLite chandeliers are measured below.
Style is the easy part. Size is what goes wrong: the fixture arrives lost in the room or hanging in everyone's eyeline. Here are the measurements that matter, and where VidaLite's ten chandeliers, 14.5 to 37.5 inches wide and 15.5 to 57 inches tall, land.
Chandelier size starts with the table width
If the chandelier hangs over a dining table, the table sets the size: the table's width minus 12 inches. A 48 inch round table takes a fixture around 36 inches across; a 42 inch wide rectangular table, around 30. That leaves about 6 inches of clear air each side, enough that nobody reaching for the salt meets a glass shade.
With no table, size to the room: add the length and width in feet, then read the sum as inches. A 12 by 14 foot living room suggests a 26 inch fixture; an 11 by 11 foot bedroom suggests 22 inches.
Body height, the number the stem cannot fix
Every chandelier has two heights: the body height of the fixture itself, and the total drop once you add stem or chain. The stem is adjustable. The body height is not, and it caps how high the bottom can ever sit.
A common proportion guideline is 2.5 to 3 inches of body height per foot of ceiling, so 20 to 24 inches on an 8 foot ceiling. Four VidaLite chandeliers sit in that band: Breeze 8 at 20 inches, Seren 9 at 20.5, Savannah 6 at 22, and Splay 10 at 22.5.
Treat that as a guideline, not a gate: it describes how big the fixture reads. Whether it clears the table is answered by the hanging-height table below, and when the two disagree that table decides.
Check body height before you commit to a silhouette. The Alina 9 Light is 48 inches tall. Hung tight to an 8 foot ceiling its bottom sits 48 inches off the floor, only 18 inches above a 30 inch tabletop, and no amount of shortening the stem fixes that. Alina wants a 10 foot ceiling or a stairwell, where its 48 inch body still fills most of the drop.
How low to hang it
Over a dining table, the bottom of the fixture belongs 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop on an 8 foot ceiling, and about 3 inches higher for every additional foot of ceiling. Taller ceilings also mean a longer total drop, so read the right-hand column before setting the hanging length.
| Ceiling height | Bottom above the tabletop | Total drop, ceiling to fixture bottom (30 in tabletop) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in) | 30 to 36 in | 36 to 30 in |
| 9 ft (108 in) | 33 to 39 in | 45 to 39 in |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 36 to 42 in | 54 to 48 in |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 42 to 48 in | 72 to 66 in |
The two ranges run opposite: more clearance above the table means a shorter drop. Total drop includes the fixture's own body, so subtract body height to get the chain or stem you need: 14 inches for a 22 inch chandelier at a 36 inch drop.
Center the fixture on the table rather than the room. For a table longer than about 8 feet, two smaller fixtures often beat one oversized one, the same logic as hanging pendant lights over a kitchen island. Over a walkway the table rule drops out: keep the bottom at least 7 feet off the floor so people pass under without ducking. Over furniture, hang lower.
Which VidaLite chandelier size fits your table
Every fixture in the chandelier collection, measured. The third column is the table width each suits, minus-12, rounded up.
| VidaLite chandelier | Width and body height | Best over a table about |
|---|---|---|
| Savannah 3 Light | 14.5 in wide · 15.5 in tall | 27 in |
| Breeze 8 Light | 21 in wide · 20 in tall | 33 in |
| Breeze 6 Light | 23 in wide · 33 in tall | 35 in, little stem left on 8 ft |
| Savannah 6 Light | 26 in wide · 22 in tall | 38 in |
| Spyder 6 Head Web | 25.98 x 28.76 in · 57 in tall | 41 in, needs 12 ft ceilings |
| Seren 9 Light | 29 in wide · 20.5 in tall | 41 in |
| Alina 9 Light | 30 in wide · 48 in tall | 42 in, needs 10 ft ceilings |
| Aurelia 8 Light | 35.5 in wide · 28 in tall | 48 in |
| Nimbus 12 Light | 36.25 in wide · 29 in tall | 49 in |
| Splay 10 Light | 37.5 in wide · 22.5 in tall | 50 in |
A wider table takes the next fixture up, a narrower one the next down. Above a 50 inch table the minus-12 rule runs out of catalog. The looser one-half-to-two-thirds convention puts the 35.5 to 37.5 inch Aurelia, Nimbus, and Splay over round tables in the low to mid 50s. The Spyder is the outlier, a web form rather than a round one, so size it on its longer 28.76 inch axis.
With no table underneath, read the same widths against the room rule: the 14.5 inch Savannah 3 suits about a 7 by 7 foot room; the 21 to 26 inch fixtures, 10 by 11 up to 13 by 13 feet; the 29 to 30 inch Seren and Alina, 14 by 15 up to 15 by 15; the 35.5 to 37.5 inch fixtures, 17 by 18 up to 18 by 19 feet.
Finishes run brass on Alina and Aurelia, brushed brass on Splay, polished chrome on Nimbus, matte black on Seren and on both Savannahs, which add an ashwood brown accent, matte white on the Breeze pair, and white or black on the Spyder. To match one to existing hardware, see the guide to choosing a lighting finish.
Light source varies by model. Savannah, Aurelia, Seren, Nimbus, and Splay use E12 candelabra bulbs at 60 watts maximum; the Breeze pair and the Spyder take G9 bulbs at 5 watts maximum, and Breeze ships with 3.5 watt LEDs at 3000K.
Alina is the integrated one: a COB LED module at 2700K with a CRI of 80, drawing 30 watts. Alina and Nimbus are confirmed dimmable, so check the spec on the others before pairing one with a dimmer.

Frequently asked questions
What size chandelier do I need for a dining room table?
Take the table's width and subtract 12 inches. A 48 inch round table takes a chandelier around 36 inches across, a 42 inch table around 30 inches, and a 36 inch table around 24 inches. Size to the table, not the room.
What size chandelier for a 12x12 room?
Add the length and width in feet and read the sum as inches, so a 12 by 12 foot room suggests about a 24 inch fixture. Two VidaLite chandeliers sit near that mark with bodies short enough for an 8 foot ceiling: the Breeze 8 Light at 21 inches wide and the Savannah 6 Light at 26. Center one over a table or seating group rather than a walkway, which needs 7 feet of headroom.
How low should a chandelier hang over a table?
On an 8 foot ceiling, the bottom should sit 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Add about 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling, so a 10 foot ceiling puts it 36 to 42 inches above the table. Over a walkway instead, keep the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor.
Can a chandelier be too big for a room?
Yes, and height goes wrong more visibly than width. A few inches of extra width is a proportion you stop noticing. Body height is the fixture's own height, and when it overshoots, the fixture lands in your sightline and the ceiling feels lower. On an 8 foot ceiling the bottom wants to land 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, so check body height against that.
How high should a chandelier hang in an entryway?
In a single-story entry, keep the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor for clear headroom. In a two-story foyer, center the fixture in the window as seen from outside, or hang the bottom at or just above the second-floor line. Taller fixtures like the 48 inch Alina 9 Light and the 57 inch Spyder 6 Head Web suit that volume.
